Reduce Packaging

The product packaging is the first and most obvious waste from the products that the customer has to deal with. Minimising packaging, and using recyclable or recycled materials creates a good impression.

Remember the basic hierarchy whichever materials you use:

  1. Reduce
  2. Reuse
  3. Recycle

  • minimise weight - this helps keep waste to a minimum
  • minimise materials
  • minimise volume

  • encourage your customers to reuse your packaging
  • make the packaging so cool that they can't bear to throw it away
  • make it so useful that they don't want to throw it away
  • sell refills

  • when using two or more materials try to use materials which can be easily separated
  • make sure that different materials can be separated to facilitate recycling
  • if it can be recycled, provide detailed information on how and where
  • specify recycled materials whenever appropriate and promote this to your customers
  • tell the customer how and where they can recycle the item by labelling the product
    • for e.g. if you use blue glass - let customers know to put it in the green bottle bank
