Unilever tablet detergent
The main impact of most detergents is the use phase. The Unilever tablet detergent was explicitly designed with sustainable use in mind. Unilever’s user centred research indicated that many users added excessive amounts of powder or liquid to ensure a good result. To counteract this, the tablets were designed to limit resource use to the prescribed quantity, thus reducing the amount of detergent consumed and chemicals disposed of (Unilever reported a 53,000 tonne reduction in 1999) (Unilever, 2001), whilst increasing the efficiency of the wash, ensuring ease of use and maintaining performance.
By moving from powder to tablets Unilever reduced the amount of packaging material by 29% per wash (Unilever, 2001).
