Sony one piece packaging

Sony focus on four eco-design strategies when selecting the materials for their packaging, they call these the four R's:

  • Reduction
  • Replacement - with environmentally friendly..materials for which a recycling infrastructure exists
  • Reuse
  • Recycling

With this in mind Sony designed the 'one-piece box'- one piece of card that is cleverly folded to provide all the required strength for the casing of videos and DVDs. The environmental benefits of this approach are:

  • improved recyclability:
    • by constructing the packaging using a single material which is compatible with many household recycling schemes it is easy and convienant for consumers to recycle the packaging
    • by using one material and folding the edges - consumers can put the packaging into the recycling container whole - they do not have to separate and sort any joined materials
  • use of materials which do not require a company-led 'take-back' scheme:
    • the use of cardboard eliminates the need for styrene foam (which is difficult to dispose of safely)
  • reduced materials costs
