Tulip boxes made from dung
Designed in 1994 by Andreas Muller of Droog Design, the 'Bolle box' is a packaging container for tulip bulbs made from compressed dung.
Muller identified the problem of manure surplus in the Netherlands caused by the large livestock industry. By selecting an appropriate and abundant natural material, the designer has enabled the customer to fertilise the bulbs when they are planted, by burying the packaging at the same time. This packaging also reduces waste: the container is integral to success of the tulips growth, therefore it is used not discarded, also because it is made of dung it biodegrades.
