Packaging Regulations

The Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations came into force throughout the UK in May 1998, their broad goal is to reduce the volume of packaging which ends up in the waste stream and to ensure that packaging can be reused, recovered or recycled at end of life. The main focus to achieve this is through weight and volume reduction and recycling.

Under the regulations companies must ensure that:

  • the minimum amount of packaging is used
  • hazardous materials in packaging are minimised
  • the packaging can be recovered through at least one of the following ways:
    • recycling
    • incineration with energy recovery
    • composting and biodegradation
