Product Information

Consider if and how the product as a whole or parts of the product can be reused within the manufacturing process or sold/donated to third parties for reuse.

Reuse is especially applicable if the product contains:

  • expensive components
  • particularly durable components (e.g. a motor with a 15 year useful life in a product which lasts four years, may be worth recovering)
  • unseen, static parts which can be reused (i.e. internal casing)

Design considerations:

  • make parts easy to remove safely without damaging them
  • use of appropriate fixings and fittings
  • how to monitor the wear exerted on components during use - to ensure those items recovered are still fit for purpose
  • if components need to be cleaned or tested prior to reuse and how to facilitate this. For help with this visit the design for cleanability section.
